OT cyber security, also called operational technology security, protects the operational technology (OT) that controls physical processes: industrial control systems (ICS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers, building management systems and the OT networks that connect them. The priority is safety and operational continuity, so OT security measures have to protect critical infrastructure without disrupting it.
Traditional IT security protects data and business IT systems. OT security protects the systems that run physical operations, which often include legacy systems that cannot be patched or restarted on demand, so standard security tools cannot always be used. That is why IT4A separates IT and OT networks with segmentation and a protocol gateway, and relies on continuous monitoring and threat detection where upgrades are not yet possible.
